Cipinang fire kills one man

JAKARTA (JP): A man was killed yesterday while attempting to put out a fire which gutted 10 houses in Cipinang, East Jakarta, police said.

The victim, 46-year old Sumaryana, was electrocuted as he was taking water from a ditch. His body was taken to the Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital for an autopsy.

The fire was believed to have been caused by an electric short circuit in a house belonging to Casmari, a trader.

Three fire engines were sent to the site to extinguish the blaze.

Another fire in Cakung, East Jakarta, razed a warehouse full of timber and gutted five neighboring houses, police said.

There were no casualties, but losses were estimated at Rp 600 million ($240,000).

The fire was reported to have started in the warehouse, owned by a man named Saiful.

Ten fire engines were sent to put out the fire. (04)
