Cipinang Detention Centre develops layer chicken farming involving inmates
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Cipinang Class I Detention Centre in Jakarta is developing a food security programme through layer chicken farming, involving inmates (WBP).
The Head of Cipinang Class I Detention Centre, I Gusti Lanang Agus Cahyani Putra, stated that the involvement of inmates is part of the independent coaching activities designed to provide them with skills for their return to society.
“This programme is implemented through Activity Guidance (Bimgiat), which involves inmates in the cultivation of layer chickens,” Gusti said in a statement in Jakarta on Monday.
He explained that there are 500 layer chickens being farmed within the detention centre premises.
In its implementation, inmates are involved in various livestock activities, such as feeding, maintaining chicken hygiene, and the egg harvesting process.
Every activity, he noted, is carried out under the direction of Bimgiat instructors to ensure the maintenance process runs smoothly, while simultaneously serving as a learning opportunity for the inmates.
“The direct involvement of inmates is expected to foster discipline, responsibility, and work skills,” he said.
According to Gusti, the development of layer chicken farming is part of Cipinang Detention Centre’s commitment to providing coaching that offers tangible benefits to inmates.
Through Bimgiat, he continued, inmates are not only provided with activities during their rehabilitation period but also given the opportunity to learn skills that can be developed after their release.
He added that, in addition to being a learning tool, the results of the layer chicken farming are also directed towards supporting the internal food needs of the detention centre, particularly in meeting the protein intake requirements for inmates.
Gusti hopes that with sustainable management and under the supervision of Bimgiat instructors, this programme will be able to provide benefits from two sides.
“The first side strengthens food security while supporting the independent coaching programme,” he explained.
He added that Cipinang Class I Detention Centre continues to encourage independent coaching not to remain merely a routine activity, but to produce experiences and skills that provide lasting benefits.
“From caring for hundreds of chickens to producing eggs, every process becomes part of the inmates’ journey to learn how to work, be responsible, and prepare themselves for life after returning to their families and society,” said Gusti.
