Cimuning Residents Hit by SPBE Explosion: Homes Destroyed and Livelihoods Lost
A severe fire accompanied by an explosion struck the Cimuning Bulk LPG Filling Station (SPBE) in Mustika Jaya, Bekasi City, on Wednesday night (1 April 2026). The incident damaged residents’ settlements, caused material losses amounting to billions of rupiah, and left dozens of people homeless. The Bekasi City Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) recorded at least 19 houses, several kiosks, and public facilities affected, with the total burnt area reaching around 2,000 square metres. In addition, 17 people sustained injuries and are still undergoing treatment at various hospitals in Bekasi. There were no fatalities in this incident. Several houses were levelled to the ground, leaving charred walls and nearly collapsed frames. Household items, from mattresses and furniture to kitchen appliances and electronics, were completely burnt. The fire also destroyed residents’ sources of income. Ningsih (31), one of the victims, estimated her losses at Rp700 million. “Because I had four rental units, plus a motorbike, and Rp15 million in cash that all burnt,” Ningsih told Kompas.com on Thursday (2 April 2026). She added that important documents such as diplomas, birth certificates, ID cards, family cards, and family clothing were also destroyed. Martin (45) lost two houses and three rental units. He estimated his total losses at Rp1 billion. “Well, the losses might be around Rp1 billion gone. Because there was a motorbike, bicycle, household appliances, sound system, and valuable documents that all burnt,” he said. “We don’t know how long this will last, and we’re confused about where to go. Where will the income come from for the future? The rentals and businesses are all gone,” Martin said. Amid these difficult conditions, Martin claimed he had not received any communication or apologies from the relevant parties, including Pertamina or the SPBE management. Ningsih recounted that when the fire occurred, the flames spread very quickly, almost collapsing the roof of her house. Ningsih and her family were inside the house and could not save anything.
