Cimuning Bekasi SPBE Fire Suspected Due to Gas Leak, One Tank Destroyed
Bekasi - A fire at the Cimuning Bulk LPG Filling Station (SPBE) in Mustikajaya, Bekasi City, on Wednesday (1/4/2026) is suspected to have been caused by a gas leak. “The source of the fire, according to witnesses, was a leak during the filling of large cylinders,” said Deputy Mayor of Bekasi Abdul Harris Bobihoe during a visit to the fire site on Thursday (2/4/2026). Harris explained that the Cimuning SPBE has two tanks with capacities of 20,000 metric tons and 50,000 metric tons each. “So the 50,000 one is currently being handled; it has been cooled and the valve closed. But we remain vigilant because we are concerned about potential leaks afterwards,” Harris clarified. Nevertheless, Harris emphasised that the exact cause of the fire at the Cimuning Bekasi SPBE is still awaiting results from the National Police forensic laboratory investigation. “So, we cannot enter the area yet, and insha’Allah, in the near future, today, the police will begin their investigation,” he said. “The burnt area is around 2,000 square metres. For the preliminary suspicion, it was due to an electrical short circuit,” said Acting Head of the Bekasi City Fire and Rescue Department (Disdamkarmat), Heryanto, to the media near the fire site on Thursday. As a result of the fire, almost the entire SPBE area suffered severe damage. According to Heryanto, the fire occurred while the SPBE was in operation, increasing the risks, including the potential for gas explosions. “Gas like this requires special handling and must be mapped where the fire points are,” he said. Firefighters had to be extra careful to prevent potential subsequent explosions, making the handling more complex than a regular fire.
