An explosion occurred at Cimanggis Market in South Tangerang. Police said the site of the blast was a fruit storage warehouse.

“Based on our findings, this is a fruit storage warehouse,” said Brigadier General Susatyo Purnomo Condro, Director of General Crimes at the National Police’s Criminal Investigation Department, at the scene in South Tangerang on Thursday (15 October 2026).

Susatyo said fruit was being packed for delivery when the incident happened. Police will carry out further examinations to establish more details.

“According to statements from witnesses in the area, packing activities were under way, including packing fruit to be supplied to markets and elsewhere,” he said.

“Bananas were found there. A large quantity of bananas, still unripe, was found in the area that had suffered the most severe damage,” he added.

Five witnesses to be questioned

Susatyo said the crime-scene investigation would resume the following morning. Police are currently preparing to question five witnesses.

“There are five witnesses who will be questioned at the South Tangerang Police Headquarters. We will provide further updates tomorrow,” he said.

The explosion left 11 people injured and two dead. Susatyo said most of the victims were workers at the fruit warehouse.

“Some of them were workers, while some victims were found in front of the shop-house,” he said.

The explosion occurred at 6.15pm on Wednesday (14 October). All the victims were evacuated to several hospitals, including Sari Asih Hospital, Fatmawati Hospital and South Tangerang Regional General Hospital.

Desiana Kartika Bahari, head of the Jakarta Search and Rescue Office, said the evacuation operation was continuing into the evening. Responders were still searching the site for any other victims who might be trapped beneath the rubble.

“We are continuing search and rescue efforts with SAR partners and the relevant agencies,” she said.
