Ciliwung River overflows, flooding 21 neighbourhoods in South and East Jakarta
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD DKI Jakarta) has recorded that 21 neighbourhood units (RT) in South Jakarta (Jaksel) and East Jakarta (Jaktim) are inundated by flooding due to the overflow of the Ciliwung River on Friday morning. “Water levels range from 20 to 80 centimetres (cm),” said the Head of the Disaster Data and Information Centre of BPBD DKI Jakarta, Mohamad Yohan, in Jakarta on Friday. According to him, the flooding affecting 21 RTs occurred due to the overflow of the Ciliwung River after the Jakarta area and its surroundings were hit by heavy rain. He stated that the heavy rain on Thursday (16/4) caused a rise in water levels at the Depok Monitoring Post (Alert Level 3) at 21:00 WIB and the Katulampa Weir (Alert Level 3) at 23:00 WIB, resulting in several inundations in the DKI Jakarta area. “BPBD records that currently, there are 21 RTs flooded,” Yohan said. He revealed that handling efforts have been carried out by BPBD DKI by deploying personnel to monitor the inundation conditions in each area. In addition, they are coordinating with the Water Resources Agency, the Public Works Agency, and the Fire and Rescue Agency to carry out inundation pumping and ensure that water barriers function properly. “The inundations are targeted to recede quickly,” Yohan emphasised.
