JAKARTA - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has responded to the condition of the Ciliwung River, which is filled with sediment deposits, weeds, and piles of rubbish.

Pramono stated that he welcomes the public’s complaints that have gone viral on social media regarding the cleanliness of the river.

According to him, this greatly assists the government in acting more quickly in locations that have escaped monitoring.

“Indeed, I must admit, the more it goes viral, the better in my opinion. So we can handle it immediately. Because not all areas can be reached,” Pramono said after attending a plenary meeting at the DKI Jakarta DPRD Building on Monday (13/4/2026).

“Similar to the recent dredging work at the meeting point of the Ciliwung and Krukut rivers a few days ago. That also became a source where the water could not flow quickly to the sea,” he added.

However, the area of that stream is currently being handled and cleaned by personnel from the Central Jakarta Water Resources Sub-Department.

For a long-term solution, Pramono mentioned that a project to dredge sediment deposits in the river area has been carried out, amounting to approximately 178,000 cubic metres.

“Hopefully, it will be completed within this year to be dredged so that water from the Krukut and Ciliwung can flow to the sea more quickly,” he said.

Progress on land acquisition at several key points has also begun to be resolved.

“And yesterday, the focus for the Ciliwung is actually the normalisation of the Ciliwung River in the Cawang segment. And alhamdulillah, the land acquisition is relatively complete,” he concluded.

The flow of the Ciliwung Stream in the Menteng area, Central Jakarta, has been complained about because it is filled with rubbish and mud.

In a post from the Instagram account @wargajakarta.id, it can be seen that almost half of the river area is covered by mud deposits, even overgrown with green weeds.

Rubbish in the form of plastic, leaves, and household furniture items can be seen in the water body area.

Weeds grow lush along the sides of the stream flow, to the extent that a plant can be seen growing on top of it.

As a result of being full of rubbish and mud, the stream’s water flow is almost stagnant.

“The condition is observed to stretch about 1.3 kilometres from Jalan Pangeran Diponegoro to Jalan Talang, Pegangsaan, Menteng, Central Jakarta,” states the account’s caption.
