Cilincing Fishermen Threaten Larger Protest if Concerns Over Development Project Are Ignored
JAKARTA - Fishermen in Muara Cakung Drain, Cilincing, North Jakarta, have threatened to stage a larger action if their protests against the development project in the area are not addressed.
The statement came after dozens of fishermen held a boat parade around the site of the New Priok Eastern Access (NPEA) pile installation project and the Dermaga Pier 3 Marunda reclamation, on Tuesday (14/4/2026).
One of the fishermen, Edy Kurniawan (35), said that the fishermen had conveyed their aspirations and would pursue official channels by sending letters and requesting an audience with the project managers.
“If, for example, after the audience it’s still the same, we will do something that might be more than this,” he stated.
He explained that the boat parade action carried out by the fishermen was a form of aspiration to demand clarity on the project being worked on.
“Clarity on what is going to be built there, and we just ask for a road, access that is indeed not suitable for the fishermen while walking like that,” he said.
He hopes that the project managers will respond to the fishermen’s concerns and provide good access for their boats.
Previously reported, a number of fishermen in Muara Cakung Drain, Cilincing, North Jakarta, held a boat parade as a form of protest against the construction around the estuary, on Tuesday (14/4/2026) afternoon.
Based on Kompas.com’s observations at the location from 4:00 PM WIB, dozens of fishermen’s boats began moving out of the estuary towards the project area.
Local residents were seen watching the parade from atop the embankment around the estuary.
“Come on, let’s go, for the future of Cilincing,” the fishermen shouted from the boats to the residents on the embankment.
The projects targeted by the protest are the New Priok Eastern Access (NPEA) development and the Dermaga Pier 3 Marunda reclamation.
