The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and the German government today signed a Host Country Agreement, marking an important step in deepening their long-term partnership in sustainable development, climate action, and global food security as key pillars of global stability and security. The agreement was signed in Jakarta, Indonesia, by CIFOR’s Director General Robert Nasi and the German Ambassador to Indonesia, Ralf Beste, on behalf of the German government, paving the way for the establishment of CIFOR’s European secretariat in Bonn, Germany. Amid rising geopolitical tensions, climate risks, and food insecurity, this partnership reaffirms a shared commitment to addressing the root causes of instability. Sustainable land use, resilient food systems, and climate resilience are the primary focuses of both parties in efforts to prevent conflicts, strengthen livelihoods, and enhance long-term human welfare. Building on Germany’s decades-long support for international research and development cooperation, the establishment of CIFOR’s European secretariat in Bonn reflects an ongoing commitment to science-based solutions that connect global knowledge with local realities. Germany is recognised as a key partner in advancing forestry, land-use, and agricultural research, while promoting innovations that protect ecosystems and improve community welfare. “In an increasingly complex global context, partnerships based on science and innovation are essential to addressing the root causes of instability,” said German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Reem Alabali Radovan, quoted from a written statement on Monday (21/4/2026). “Germany’s support for establishing CIFOR’s European secretariat in Bonn is a manifestation of our commitment to advancing sustainable development and safeguarding food security, climate resilience, and biodiversity through sustainable land use. The CIFOR secretariat will also further strengthen Bonn’s position as a primary hub for international organisations working in climate, environment, and sustainable development.” CIFOR, which is part of the CGIAR system, is an international agricultural research organisation operating in more than 60 countries. The institution integrates environmental, economic, and social aspects to develop nature-based solutions, from deforestation-free agroforestry to forest restoration and sustainable food systems.
