Cianjur Regency: Disaster emergency alert status extended
Cianjur (ANTARA) - The Cianjur Regency Government in West Java has extended the disaster emergency alert status for 2026, adjusting to extreme weather forecasts from the BMKG that are expected to persist for several months ahead.
Cianjur Regent Mohammad Wahyu Ferdian in Cianjur on Sunday stated that as a step to anticipate disaster management, his administration has currently mapped several areas vulnerable to disasters such as floods, landslides, and others.
The disaster emergency alert status has been set in line with extreme weather predictions that are expected to continue until June-July, affecting most of Cianjur’s regions, including the seasonal transition from rain to heat.
“The disaster emergency alert status has been extended, and the Cianjur Regency Government has prepared a disaster fund budget to address extreme weather conditions and the potential seasonal transition that could lead to a prolonged dry period,” he said.
He explained that the disaster emergency alert status in Cianjur had previously ended on 30 April, but given the ongoing extreme weather and natural disasters occurring in several sub-districts, his administration has decided to extend it.
As reported, the Cianjur Regional Disaster Management Agency has proposed extending the disaster emergency alert status until December 2026, as the region is now entering the transition from the rainy to the hot season.
During this seasonal transition, a faster and longer dry period is predicted, requiring vigilance from the community, especially in areas prone to drought.
“The wet dry season has already begun, which is a weather change where it is clear or hot in the morning and rain occurs in the evening until night,” said Asep Sudrajat, Secretary of the Cianjur BPBD.
According to information from the BMKG, he added, after the wet dry season passes, a drier dry season is expected to start in mid-year and is predicted to last quite long.
Therefore, to anticipate this, his agency together with the Cianjur Regency Government has conducted mitigation and mapping efforts, including adding borehole points and water reservoirs that can serve as water sources for residents in drought-prone areas.
