Cianjur Manpower Office: Migrant Worker Placement Reduces Unemployment

The Manpower and Transmigration Office (Disnakertrans) of Cianjur Regency, West Java, has recorded that the migrant worker placement programme is one of the efforts to reduce the open unemployment rate in Cianjur while supporting the “SMK Go Global” programme.

Head of Cianjur Disnakertrans Denny Widya Lesmana said on Thursday that 337 prospective migrant workers from Cianjur have been dispatched to work in Japan and Taiwan, and were officially seen off by Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar.

They were dispatched through a labour placement programme facilitated by Job Training Institutions (LPK), Vocational Training Centres (BLK), and Indonesian Migrant Worker Placement Companies (P3MI), with the hope that the number will continue to grow next year.

“The hundreds of migrant workers who departed are mostly young, coming from 12 LPKs and BLKs, and they have been placed in two destination countries, Japan and Taiwan. Next year, the number is expected to continue increasing,” he said.

The overseas job placement programme is part of the local government’s efforts to make the “SMK Go Global” programme a success, so that every graduate has the opportunity to work abroad in the formal sector.

“This is proof that Cianjur Regency is taking concrete steps to improve the quality of placement of Indonesian migrant workers into the formal or strategic sectors, not only the informal sector,” he said.

The local government, together with Cianjur Disnakertrans, continues to work to reduce unemployment through job training at BLKs and job placement programmes, including sending formal sector migrant workers abroad.

“We will continue to support various job placement programmes, from domestic to overseas, so that we can reduce the unemployment rate, which remains high at around 6.17 percent each year,” he said.
