Ciangir Prison Inmates in Banten Farm Livestock, Supply Eggs to Jakarta Hotels
The Class IIB Ciangir Open Prison in Tangerang, Banten, is empowering inmates through livestock farming and agriculture. Inmates are tasked with caring for cattle, goats, and chickens, as well as harvesting crops such as cucumbers. Head of the Banten Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections, Lili, explained that only inmates who have passed a strict assessment and are approaching their release date are selected for the programme. “There are 50 inmates here who have been strictly assessed. We will add 20 more to work here. They receive wages according to their work results, which boosts their spirit,” Lili said during a site visit on Thursday (9/7/2026). Head of Ciangir Prison, Soeistanto Poedji Djatmiko, noted that the facility’s flagship programme includes a highly productive poultry operation. “The daily egg production currently reaches 860 kilograms. The products are even supplied to a hotel in Kemayoran, Jakarta,” he stated. Beyond poultry, the prison also cultivates free-range chickens, eggplants, and bok choy, and plans to expand its rice paddies. During the recent Eid al-Adha, the facility sold 25 sheep and 11 beef cattle.
