The United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) assesses that Iran will be able to withstand a US naval blockade for up to three or four months ahead. The CIA has revealed that Tehran still possesses 70% of its missile supplies, despite being relentlessly bombarded by the US and Israel since late February.

The CIA’s analysis report, as reported by Middle East Eye on Friday (8/5/2026), was disclosed in the latest report from a leading US media outlet, The Washington Post, on Thursday (7/5) local time. The CIA report was presented to the administration of US President Donald Trump this week.

According to The Washington Post, the CIA’s report states that Iran is capable of maintaining “significant ballistic missile capabilities” after weeks of bombardment by the US and Israel.

The CIA report contradicts public statements made by Trump and other senior US officials regarding Iran’s status. The Trump administration had previously claimed that the majority of Iran’s missile and drone capabilities had been destroyed.

According to a US official cited by The Washington Post, Iran still has 75% of its pre-war mobile missile launchers and around 70% of its pre-war missile supplies. Iran is also said to have successfully reopened its underground missile storage facilities.

“Their missiles have mostly been destroyed. They might have 18-19%, but that’s not much compared to what they had before,” Trump stated in the Oval Office at the White House on Wednesday (6/5).

Trump and his key advisers have insisted for weeks that Iran has been crippled by US and Israeli attacks. However, Tehran has demonstrated that its military command and control remains intact and capable of launching attacks at any time.

The US has also claimed that the naval blockade it imposed has left Iran without storage space for its oil production, with oil build-up said to trigger the collapse of Tehran’s energy infrastructure.

Analysts told Middle East Eye that Iran only has storage space for “a few weeks” left. Meanwhile, energy analysis firm Kpler told the New York Times that Iran has 25-30 days before running out of storage space.

The CIA’s analysis report, cited by The Washington Post, provides a longer timeframe estimate before Iran potentially faces a broader economic crisis due to the US blockade.

The CIA estimates that Tehran can hold out for 90-120 days before facing “severe economic difficulties”.
