Chrysler mulls Thai plant
BANGKOK (Reuter): Chrysler Corp is mulling the possibility of
locating a new vehicle assembly plant in Thailand or Indonesia,
Chrysler's senior Thai representative said.
"We are in the first phase of deciding right now. We are doing
a study now and should have the report next month. The study is
to see if there is a market here and for which model," Abhichet
Sitakalin, senior vice president of marketing and sales of
Chrysler's Thai unit, said late on Tuesday.
Chrysler would also look into whether it should expand
existing facilities or build a new plant under the latest plan.
The company's Thai unit, Thai Chrysler Automotive Ltd, will
start assembling right-hand-drive Jeep Cherokee sport utility
vehicles at a Bangkok plant in July.
"We are not like General Motors, we are targeting specific
markets, while GM and Ford are targeting the whole region,"
Abhichet told reporters.
