The Indonesian Army (TNI AD) has revealed the initial chronology of an explosion at the Central Ammunition Depot II of the Army Equipment Centre (Puspalad) in Saradan District, Madiun Regency, East Java, on Thursday, 16 July 2026. Based on initial reports, the explosion occurred while army personnel were carrying out inspection and maintenance procedures on materiel in one of the storage warehouses. The incident resulted in the death of one soldier, while six other personnel sustained injuries. Army Information Chief Brigadier General Donny Pramono stated that the information received indicated the explosion happened during a routine inspection activity. ‘Based on the initial report we received, the incident occurred when personnel were carrying out inspection and maintenance procedures on materiel in one of the storage warehouses,’ Donny said during a press conference. He explained that the exact cause of the explosion could not yet be confirmed. The Army is still gathering facts on the ground to determine the detailed chronology of the event. To uncover the cause of the incident, the Army has formed an investigation team to conduct a thorough inquiry. ‘The Indonesian Army has taken initial handling steps and formed an investigation team to conduct a thorough and in-depth investigation to determine the exact chronology and cause of the incident,’ he said. According to Donny, the investigation process is still ongoing, so no conclusions have been reached regarding the factors that caused the explosion. The investigation team is also still working to clear and secure the area around the ammunition depot. The process is being carried out in stages, starting from the outermost area and moving towards the explosion site. This step is necessary to ensure the investigation can proceed safely, given that the location is a military ammunition storage area. The Army has also not been able to confirm the type of ammunition that was the source of the explosion at Central Ammunition Depot II. Donny stressed that the authorities do not wish to speculate before the investigation results are complete.
