Chronology of KMP Virgo Transport 8 Capsizing in the Java Sea
The accident involving KMP Virgo Transport 8 has drawn significant attention after the vessel, travelling from Surabaya to Banjarmasin, entered an emergency state in the Java Sea waters on Sunday (13/9). The ship was carrying 243 people, consisting of 213 passengers and 30 crew members.
The incident occurred after the ship was reported to be facing bad weather and subsequently lost contact. A joint SAR (Search and Rescue) team was immediately deployed to search for and evacuate passengers in the vicinity of the incident.
Departing from Surabaya, KMP Virgo Transport 8 set sail for Banjarmasin on Saturday (12/9), transporting 243 people on the voyage to South Kalimantan. During the journey, weather conditions in the Java Sea deteriorated. Around midnight, the ship’s crew reported the weather conditions to their agent.
In the early hours of Sunday, at approximately 02:00 WITA, the captain reported that the ship was listing. This report served as the initial sign of an emergency situation on board. The Head of the Banjarmasin SAR Office, I Putu Sudayana, stated that the team moved immediately after receiving information regarding the ship’s condition. The vessel’s last known position was in the Java Sea waters, approximately 80 nautical miles from Banjarmasin.
Several reports also indicated that the ship faced high waves during the emergency. However, the exact cause of the accident is still under government investigation. The Minister of Transportation, Dudy Purwagandhi, emphasised that an investigation is necessary to ensure whether the accident is related to natural factors, technical issues, or human error.
After being reported out of contact, the ship was eventually found in a capsized state. Aerial reports and ground teams confirmed that KMP Virgo Transport 8 had met with an accident in the Java Sea waters. In the initial stages, there were conflicting reports regarding whether the ship had fully sunk or was still floating upside down. The Minister of Transportation later stated, based on helicopter monitoring, that the ship was capsized but had not fully submerged at the time of the observation.
Therefore, the most accurate term to describe the initial event is that the ship capsized or met with an accident, while the final status of the vessel remains part of the ongoing handling and search operations at the site.
Several nearby vessels assisted in the rescue process, including KM Haida, the Pertamina-owned MT Mauhau, and tugboats in the surrounding waters. As of Sunday’s developments, the number of people successfully evacuated reached over 100. The tanker MT Mauhau, owned by Pertamina Patra Niaga, was also reported to have rescued 16 people from the accident.
Latest data reported on Sunday night indicates that 108 people have been successfully rescued, six people have died, and 129 others remain missing. The search operation continued on Monday (14/9), with over 600 SAR personnel and approximately 12 ships deployed to sweep the waters where KMP Virgo Transport 8 met with its accident.
The search is focused on locating the missing passengers and ensuring all victims in the vicinity of the ship can be evacuated. The Ministry of Transportation has also instructed that the search, evacuation, and passenger data collection be made a priority. The government is still conducting an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.
While bad weather and high waves are part of the initial information regarding the KMP Virgo Transport 8 accident, it cannot yet be concluded that weather was the sole cause. The government is still gathering information from the captain, crew, survivors, and technical data from the ship to understand the cause of the accident comprehensively.
Thus, the confirmed chronology shows that KMP Virgo Transport 8 departed from Surabaya for Banjarmasin, encountered bad weather, was reported to be listing around 02:00 WITA, lost contact, and was eventually found capsized in the Java Sea. The search and evacuation process continues as of Monday, 14 September 2026.
