Chronology of Clash Between Two Groups on Jalan Tambak Menteng

The Central Jakarta Metropolitan Police are still investigating a clash between two groups on Jalan Tambak, Menteng, which resulted in the death of a person with the initials K on Sunday (26/7).

The Chief of Central Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Kombes Reynold E.P Hutagalung, explained that the incident began when two youths passed by revving their motorcycles, creating a disturbance.

According to Reynold, local residents reprimanded the youths’ actions because they were disturbed by the noise of their exhaust pipes. However, the youths took offence and returned with five others.

“They were reprimanded and took offence, and the two of them brought five of their friends back to the location, causing a commotion and even damaging several small businesses (UMKM) there; even a resident was beaten,” he told reporters on Sunday (26/7).

“This is something we must pursue through law enforcement so that both sides can be treated fairly in the legal process, both from the residents’ side and the group of people who became victims,” said Reynold.

Police are also still investigating whether the youths who revved their motorcycles were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

“When checks were carried out at the location, there was certainly a commotion. However, we will coordinate with RSCM to determine whether alcohol was indeed a factor, leading this person to rev his motorcycle,” said Reynold.

He explained that this incident angered a number of residents, culminating in the throwing of stones at the perpetrators.

Reynold said the confrontation continued to an empty plot of land believed to be where the youths lived.

“Residents acted spontaneously because they felt disturbed, so they threw stones, resulting in two people at the location having to be evacuated by police to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital. One with the initials K, and the other DS,” he said.

To date, police have secured three people suspected of involvement in the assault that left one person dead in the clash on Jalan Tambak, Menteng, Central Jakarta.

Police have also intensively questioned 15 people in connection with the entire chain of events that led to the clash.
