The Central Jakarta Metro Police are investigating a clash between two groups on Jalan Tambak, Menteng, which resulted in the death of an individual identified by the initial K on Sunday (26/7). Central Jakarta Metro Police Chief, Senior Commissioner Reynold E.P. Hutagalung, explained that the incident began when two young men rode past and revved their motorcycle engines, causing a noise disturbance. According to Reynold, local residents reprimanded the youths for the noise. However, the youths did not accept the rebuke and returned with five other individuals. “They were reprimanded but did not accept it, and the two individuals invited five other friends to return to the location to cause a disturbance and even damaged several local MSMEs, and a resident was struck,” he told reporters on Sunday (26/7). “We also need to enforce the law so that both parties can be treated fairly in the legal process, both the residents and the group of individuals who became victims,” Reynold added. Police are also investigating whether the perpetrators who revved their engines were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. “At the time of the check at the location, there was certainly noise. However, we will coordinate with the Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital to determine whether there is a link to alcohol consumption that led the individual to rev his motorcycle,” Reynold stated. He explained that the incident angered a number of residents, which culminated in stones being thrown at the perpetrators. Reynold said the action continued into a vacant lot believed to be where the young men were staying. “Residents spontaneously, feeling disturbed by the neighbourhood disruption, threw stones, which resulted in two individuals having to be evacuated by the police to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital. One with the initial K, and the other DS,” he said. To date, police have detained three people suspected of involvement in the assault that led to the death of one person during the clash on Jalan Tambak, Menteng, Central Jakarta. Police have also intensively questioned 15 individuals regarding the entire sequence of events that led to the clash.
