A brawl at a bar in the tourist area of Canggu, Badung, Bali, ended in a shooting. A bullet penetrated the thigh of a security officer before lodging in the thigh of a Chinese national. Police are now hunting the perpetrator, who is suspected of fleeing the Island of the Gods after the shooting. “We are pursuing the perpetrator of this shooting. Officers in the field have also placed a police line at the crime scene,” said Badung Police Chief AKBP Joseph Edward Purba on Saturday (18/7/2026). The incident occurred at The Shady Pig on Jalan Pantai Berawa, Canggu, North Kuta District, Badung Regency, on Friday (17/7/2026) at around 2.50 a.m. local time. At that time, a bar security officer with the initials IMYM (32) was attempting to break up an argument between the suspected perpetrator and a Chinese national with the initials EA (25). The attempt to mediate the brawl ended with the shooting. IMYM, who was standing in front of EA, was hit first. The bullet then penetrated the security guard’s left thigh and struck the left thigh of EA, who was standing directly behind him. “Initially, there was a brawl between the perpetrator and the foreign tourist, then the security guard came to block them right in front of the second victim with their bodies very close together. At that moment, the perpetrator fired a shot, and the bullet penetrated the security guard’s left thigh and then lodged directly in the left thigh of the foreign national behind him,” said Joseph. After receiving the report, police deployed a joint team from the Badung Police and the North Kuta Police to process the crime scene. Investigators also examined several witnesses and analysed CCTV footage. “The Criminal Investigation Unit and North Kuta Police teams have conducted preliminary investigations at the location and analysed the CCTV footage. We have also sent a request for a visum et repertum to the hospital where both victims are being treated,” said Joseph. During the investigation, police secured a number of pieces of evidence from the scene. The evidence includes the victims’ torn and bloodstained clothing, a pair of black-and-white shoes with blood spots, a pair of black socks, a white t-shirt, two pairs of cut and torn black jeans, a piece of red checkered cloth, and one bullet projectile. “All of the victims’ clothing and one brass-coloured bullet projectile have been secured as key evidence. We are currently fully focused on apprehending the perpetrator so that the main motive for this shooting can be revealed immediately,” concluded Joseph.
