The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has decided to terminate the early tsunami warning following an earthquake in the Philippines, as observations revealed no significant or dangerous rise in sea levels. “The early tsunami warning was declared ended at 10:15:51 WIB,” stated BMKG Head Teuku Faisal during a press conference on Monday (8/6/2026).

Teuku Faisal detailed the timeline of the warnings issued by BMKG:

  • 06:37:42 WIB: The earthquake occurred, impacting tsunami potential in parts of Indonesia.

  • 06:40:44 WIB: The first early warning was issued following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake (potential tsunami).

  • 06:52:26 WIB: An updated second early warning was issued, maintaining the 7.7 magnitude parameter.

  • 08:13:41 WIB: The third warning (Level 3.1) was issued as tsunamis were detected via tide gauges in Loloda, North Maluku, at 0.09 metres; Ulu Siau at 0.18 metres; and Melonguane at 0.32 metres.

  • 08:34:52 WIB: The third warning continued as waves were detected in Tahuna (0.30m), Paleleh (0.45m), Tanjung Sidupa (0.32m), Bitung (0.29m), Ternate (0.14m), and Talengen (0.75m).

  • 10:15:51 WIB: After three hours and 30 minutes, the fourth warning was issued to officially end the tsunami alert, as no further tsunami activity was detected.

Faisal further explained that residents in Melonguane experienced an earthquake intensity of VI MMI, causing wall plaster to fall and factory chimneys to be damaged. Residents in Siau and Tagulandang felt intensity V MMI, while tremors were felt clearly in Morotai, North Halmahera, and Manado at intensity IV MMI. Tremors were also felt in Toli-Toli and Gorontalo at III-IV MMI, and in various other regions including Ternate, Palu, and Bitung at intensity III MMI.

“As of 10:00 WIB, BMKG monitoring shows 20 aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 3.9 to 6.7, with two tremors being felt by the public,” said Faisal. Following the event, Faisal urged the public to remain calm and vigilant, implementing mitigation and self-protection measures to achieve zero casualties. He assured that BMKG remains on 24-hour standby, strengthening monitoring through thousands of sensors across Indonesia to ensure rapid information dissemination. He also encouraged the use of earthquake-resistant structures and advised consulting with experts or BMKG offices located across 191 sites in Indonesia.
