Choose Your Dining Spot, Protect Your Health
Selecting a place to eat involves more than just delicious food and affordable prices; cleanliness is a critical factor in preventing the spread of disease. A dirty environment can become a breeding ground for bacteria, viruses, and pests like flies and cockroaches that can contaminate food. Dining establishments must pay close attention to health aspects to avoid becoming a source of illness, with risks arising from food contamination and poor hygiene and sanitation practices. This includes the condition of the dining area, kitchen, utensils, food handler hygiene, and environmental sanitation. One key regulation is the Minister of Health Regulation No. 14 of 2021, which sets standards for business activities and products in the health sector to ensure safety, quality, and health for consumers. Proper application of hygiene and sanitation principles helps maintain food quality and reduces the risk of foodborne diseases such as diarrhoea, typhoid, hepatitis A, and food poisoning. Before deciding to eat at a place, ensure the dining area is clean and free of scattered rubbish, tables and chairs are regularly wiped down, and utensils are spotless. Handwashing facilities with running water and soap should be available, and food should be stored in covered containers to prevent contamination. It is also advisable to clean cutlery with a tissue before use.
