Chinese Tourist Bitten by Suspected Rabid Dog in Bangli
A Chinese tourist named Li Qiujun was bitten by a dog on Jalan Brigjen Ngurah Rai Number 10, Kawan Village, Bangli District, Bangli. The dog that bit the 30-year-old woman is suspected of being infected with rabies.
"There was a security disturbance; a resident and a foreign tourist from China were bitten by a dog. The incident occurred on Monday (13/7/2026)," said Bangli Police Public Relations Section Head Iptu I Gede Gumiliarta to detikBali on Tuesday (14/7/2026).
Gumiliarta stated that prior to the incident, Li Qiujun had been shopping at a supermarket in front of Bangli Regional General Hospital. After shopping, she was about to return to Ubud, Gianyar, with her tour guide.
Just after leaving the supermarket at around 4:00 p.m. local time, the woman was bitten by a white dog. As a result, Li Qiujun suffered a bite wound on her right thigh.
According to Gumiliarta, before biting Li Qiujun, the dog had also attacked a local resident of Kawan Village, Bangli District, named Ni Ketut Suciasih. Suciasih was bitten by the dog near her home, not far from the Bangli Detention Centre.
Bangli Regional General Hospital Public Relations Officer Sang Kompyang Arie Sukma Wijaya explained that Li Qiujun received treatment shortly after being bitten. The woman sought medical attention three hours after the incident.
"The patient was bitten by a dog on her right thigh, and wound care or a pressure bandage was applied," said Sang Kompyang.
He revealed that Li Qiujun only received first aid treatment at the hospital, as the anti-rabies vaccine (VAR) is only available at clinics and community health centres.
"The patient was advised to seek the VAR at a clinic or community health centre. The patient was treated at 7:07 p.m. and discharged at 7:30 p.m.," he said.
Head of the Livestock and Animal Health Division of the Bangli Agriculture and Food Service, Made Armana, said that the suspected rabid dog had been eliminated by residents. A brain sample has also been taken.
"The brain sample has been taken. Today, the sample is being examined at the laboratory," said Armana.
According to Armana, the dog did not show any symptoms of rabies the day before the incident. However, the dog exhibited aggressive behaviour and bit two people the following day.
"According to our officers, the dog showed aggressive symptoms and bit two people yesterday. But previously, it was fine," he said.
Li Qiujun has now received a VAR injection at a clinic in Ubud. Meanwhile, Suciasih has also received a VAR injection at Susut 1 Community Health Centre. It will take two weeks to determine whether the two dog bite victims are positive for rabies infection.
