Chinese swimmers dominates Asian C'ships
JAKARTA (JP): China dominated the fourth day of the Sixth Asian Swimming Championships in Pusan, South Korea, by scooping on Saturday nine of 10 gold medals on offer.
The Chinese men's team contributed a gold in the 400 meters freestyle relay by clocking 3 minutes 25.88 seconds. South Korea trailed in second place with 3:27.77 and Kazakhstan was third with 3:28.26.
The Indonesian men's team -- comprising Richard Sam Bera, Wisnu Wardhana and twin brothers Felix and Albert Christiadi Sutanto -- finished fifth with 3:29.55.
The team did not fulfill the target set by the Indonesian Swimming Federation (PRSI) of finishing third in the team event.
AFP reported Zheng Shibin of China timed 2:02.14 to grab the gold in the men's 200 backstroke. Teammate Fu Yong was second with 2:02.20 followed by Ueda Yosuke of Japan with 2:04.16.
Chinese swimmers maintained their domination by contributing another gold and silver medal in the men's 100m butterfly from Ouyang Kunpeng and Zhang Qiyang, who clocked 53.83 and 55.27 respectively. Nachaev Ravil of Uzbekistan took the bronze after splashing in at 55.65.
In the men's 400m freestyle, Jin Hao of China timed 3:58.72 for the gold trailed by Woo Chol of South Korea with 3:59.35 in second place and Takeshi Matsuda of Japan in third with 4:00.74.
In the women's events, Japanese Tomoko Hagiwara broke the Chinese domination by taking the only gold in the women's 200m backstroke thanks to the absence of Chinese swimmers in the event.
Hagiwara clocked 2:11.99 to finish first followed by compatriot Yoshiko Saito with 2:12.27 and Bang Eun-jee of South Korea with 2:16.28.
In the women's 400m freestyle, Zhang Yan and compatriot Chen Yan added more golds and silvers to the Chinese team bag after finishing first and second in 4:13.72 and 4:17.97 respectively. Roh Joo-hee of South Korea clocked 4:20.02 to earn the bronze.
Ruan Yi of China also earned the gold in the women's 100m butterfly after splashing in 1:00.19. The silver went to teammate Pang Ran with 1:01.95 and the bronze was grabbed by Hsiem Shu Tzu of China Taipei with 1:02.45.
China's women's team also won the gold in the 400m freestyle relay with the time of 3:50.55. Host South Korea was second with 3:51.24 while Japan was third with 3:54.30.
In the diving events, Chinese divers also dominated the event by making a clean sweep of the two golds at stake.
Peng Bo scored 677.22 points in the men's three-meter springboard final to earn him a gold medal. Compatriot Wang Kenan earned 657.30 points for a silver while Kwon Kyung-min of South Korea grabbed the bronze with 630.99 points.
In the women's platform final, Chinese Sun Na dived for 506.01 points followed by teammate Chen Li with 487.77 and Irina Vyguzova of Kazakhstan with 468.90. (yan)
