Chinese president gets warm welcome
KUALA LUMPUR (Reuter): Chinese President Jiang Zemin was given
a warm welcome in Malaysia yesterday at the start of a four-day
visit, the first by a leader of China's communist party to this
Southeast Asian nation.
Jiang was given a 21-gun salute at Parliament Square where he
was officially welcomed by King Ja'afar Tuanku Abdul Rahman and
Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.
Jiang arrived from Singapore on a tour that also takes him to
Jakarta for a summit of leaders from Asia and the Pacific, and to
Vietnam on his way back home.
With the region edgy about Beijing's military, political and
economic intentions, Jiang had told reporters in Beijing that he
wanted to hold "good-neighborly" talks on his tour, aiming to
establish political ties that look towards the 21st century.
