PENANG (AFP): Chinese newspapers from around the world began their annual convention here yesterday to discuss Chinese- language press technology and the future role of Chinese newspapers in Southeast Asia.
The convention, opened by Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, involves more than 40 publications from China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Panama, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and the United States.
Some 140 newspaper executives are attending the annual meeting of the Hong Kong-based Chinese Language Press Institute established in 1968.
"On the agenda of the annual convention are many wide-ranging topics such as typesetting, mechanical typesetting, computerized translation and educational issues," the Penang daily Kwong Wah Yit Poh said.
