The Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjenpas) under the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections has granted special remissions and sentence reductions to 44 Confucian inmates in commemoration of Chinese New Year 2026. Minister of Immigration and Corrections Agus Andrianto stated that the granting of special remissions and sentence reductions represents the state's recognition of inmates who have demonstrated positive behavioural changes during their rehabilitation period.

Of the 44 recipients, 43 are prisoners receiving first-tier special remissions, with the following breakdown: 11 individuals received 15-day remissions, 25 individuals received one-month remissions, three individuals received one-month-and-15-day remissions, and four individuals received two-month remissions. Additionally, one juvenile detainee received a first-tier special sentence reduction of 15 days.

"The state honours those who have demonstrated positive changes during their rehabilitation period, one form of which is through the granting of Special Remissions and Special Sentence Reductions during this Chinese New Year celebration," said Agus in a statement on Tuesday (17/2/2026).

Agus emphasised that remissions and sentence reductions are granted selectively and objectively to inmates who have fulfilled both administrative and substantive requirements in accordance with prevailing laws and regulations.

"This is carried out selectively and objectively. Beyond serving as recognition of good behaviour, this policy is also part of the government's efforts to reduce overcrowding in prisons and detention centres," he added.

In line with this, Director General of Corrections Mashudi stated that granting remissions on major religious occasions represents the fulfilment of inmates' rights as well as part of a sustainable rehabilitation strategy.

"Remissions and sentence reductions are not merely reductions in punishment, but rather rehabilitation instruments that encourage inmates to continue improving themselves and preparing to reintegrate into society," said Mashudi.

Through the granting of special remissions and sentence reductions for Chinese New Year 2026, the Directorate General of Corrections has also saved Rp25,447,500 in inmate meal costs. The initiative reaffirms the Directorate's commitment to fulfilling inmates' rights in accordance with prevailing laws and regulations, whilst supporting measured, accountable, and equitable rehabilitation.
