Chinese Manufacturer Geely to Build Factories in Indonesia

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Chinese low cost car manufacturer Geely plans to build automotive factories in Indonesia, including making Indonesia as one of the company’s production bases to meet domestic demands, as well as demands from across the ASEAN region, Australia and New Zealand.

Geely will increase its production by 30,000 units per year - 30-fold from the current Geely production in Indonesia. “We’ll carry it out in stages. [The project] may be effective in 2015,” said the PT Geely Mobil Indonesia President Director Budi Pramono in Jakarta yesterday.

Geely required its own factories to fulfill the target. The company’s production is currently being assembled by Gaya Baru Motor with its production capacity of 1,200 units per year. Geely has purchased 25 hectares of land in Delta Mas, Cikarang, in Bekasi, for its first stage. The land investment costs US$30 million to US$50 million and in the long run, the capital will expand up to US$1 billion to US$2 billion. The new factories will gradually prepare production facilities for all models of vehicles such as sport utility vehicles (SUVs), multipurpose vehicles (MPVs), city cars, and sedans.
