Chinese Investor Assaulted While Checking Gold Mine Site in South Sulawesi
An investor from China, identified only as C, together with his female associate, was allegedly assaulted by a group of people while inspecting a site for a gold mining operation in Enrekang, South Sulawesi (Sulsel). He was assaulted by residents opposed to the mining project.
“We have received reports of a Chinese national who became a victim of assault along with a female colleague. So there are two victims in total,” Enrekang Police Chief AKBP Hari Budiyanto said, as quoted by detikSulsel on Saturday, 7 March 2026.
The victim, a representative of CV Hadaf Karya Mandiri, was inspecting the site in Cendana District, Enrekang, on Friday afternoon (6 March). He was accompanied by several community figures to take samples at the gold exploration site.
“We did not know they were heading to the site. We did advise for escorts, and they (the victims) said they would report it,” Hari said.
At the site, the victims were allegedly confronted by a mob opposed to the mining at that location. It was at that moment that the victims were assaulted.
“It appears they were surveying with community leaders (without police protection). Suddenly we received information like this (being confronted by residents who oppose the mine),” he added.
After receiving the information, police went to the location to secure the victims and transport them to RSUD Massenrempulu for treatment. Police are still investigating the case.
