Chinese-Indonesians yet to register

JAKARTA: The Institute of Anti Discrimination in Indonesia (LADI) said on Tuesday that a number of Chinese-Indonesians have yet to register for next year's elections due to difficulties in obtaining identification cards.

Frans Hendra Winata, one of LADI's founders, said those unregistered Chinese-Indonesians were located in Kalimantan, North Sumatra, and South Sumatra.

Rebeka Harsono, the executive director of LADI, said she had found that poor Chinese-Indonesians in Jembatan Lima, Muara Angke (Jakarta) had not been registered by KPU as voters.

Separately, KPU chairman Nazaruddin Sjamsuddin said that KPU could register any Chinese-Indonesians as voters even if they had no ID cards. --JP
