Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi issued a stern warning about the future of Sino-American relations. At his annual press conference, Wang emphasised that the stability of the bilateral relationship is the key to world peace. The relationship between China and the United States affects the interests of many and has an impact on the entire world. If the two countries do not work together, it will only lead to misunderstandings, miscalculation, conflict, confrontation, and greater damage to peace, Wang Yi said on the sidelines of the Fourth Session of the 14th National People’s Congress (NPC) in Beijing, on Sunday, 8 March 2026.

This statement underscores Beijing’s position in the wake of a bilateral meeting between Wang Yi and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference on Friday, 13 February 2026. The meeting was crucial as part of preparations for a high-level meeting between President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump scheduled for April 2026.

Wang said the two leaders have given strategic directions for 2026 to be a moment of mutual respect and peaceful coexistence. “Dialogue is better than confrontation. Cooperation is better than conflict,” Wang Yi was quoted as saying from the official website of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

US Deputy State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott confirmed that the Rubio-Wang Yi meeting was positive and constructive. The main focus for both diplomats was to ensure results-oriented communication on bilateral and global issues. Pigott added that both sides discussed intensively the plan for President Donald Trump’s state visit to China in April 2026. The visit is expected to help ease tensions that had flared in the region.

In his Munich Security Conference address, Wang Yi outlined that China regards its relationship with Washington from a lens of historical responsibility. He saw two possible directions for the future of the relationship: “We hope the first scenario will occur, but we are also prepared to face various risks if the second scenario is chosen,” he said.

The NPC session is scheduled to run until 12 March 2026, where China’s foreign policy for the coming year will be one of the main points finalised by the country’s supreme legislature. (Sputnik-Oana/Ant/I-2)

Entering early 2026, the world was jolted by unilateral American actions in the Caribbean. China conducted large-scale military exercises around Taiwan simulating seizure and blockade of strategic areas on the island on Monday, 29 December. The United States approved an arms sale to Taiwan worth US$11 billion, announced by Taipei yesterday. The Department of Defence (Pentagon) prepared new restrictions on corporations with business ties to firms listed on the 1260H list. A secret Pentagon report suggested the US could suffer a major defeat and potentially lose its principal aircraft carrier if it sought to thwart a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.
