Chinese Foreign and Defence Ministers Meet President Prabowo Subianto
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Defence Minister Dong Jun met with President Prabowo Subianto at his residence on Jalan Kertanegara in Jakarta on Friday evening (21/8).
President Prabowo asked Wang Yi to convey his greetings and best wishes to President Xi Jinping. He expressed positive appreciation for the role and outcomes of the Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue (CSD) and the ‘2+2’ meeting, according to a statement on the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.
In photographs on the website, Wang Yi and Dong Jun were seen wearing long-sleeved batik shirts. President Prabowo also wore batik.
On Friday morning, Foreign Minister Sugiono and Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the first Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue meeting, followed by the second ‘2+2 Dialogue’ between the foreign and defence ministers of Indonesia and China, which was also attended by Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and Chinese Defence Minister Admiral Dong Jun.
The statement said President Prabowo assessed that under President Xi Jinping’s leadership, China had succeeded in lifting hundreds of millions of people out of poverty and had achieved major accomplishments in the economy, science and technology, the military, and other fields.
“These achievements have become an example for Global South countries and provide many valuable lessons that can be studied and used as a reference by various parties,” President Prabowo said in the statement.
Prabowo said China treats Indonesia as an equal and with mutual respect, and has given Indonesia valuable confidence and support.
“Indonesia hopes to strengthen comprehensive strategic cooperation with China in politics, the economy, science and technology, and other fields,” Prabowo added.
Prabowo said Indonesia welcomes more Chinese companies to invest and develop businesses in Indonesia, and will continue to provide a good business environment for Chinese companies.
Indonesia also opposes all forms of provocation and the stoking of issues carried out with hidden motives.
“I look forward to visiting Shenzhen in November this year to attend the APEC Summit and to further strengthen strategic communication and coordination with China,” Prabowo said.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Wang Yi conveyed President Xi Jinping’s warm greetings to President Prabowo and stated that under Prabowo Subianto’s leadership, Indonesia has overcome various difficulties and national development has entered a stage of rapid progress.
“The governments of China and Indonesia are both committed to developing the economy and delivering benefits to the people. No force can prevent China, Indonesia, and other developing countries from continuing to rise,” Wang Yi said.
Wang Yi stressed that China and Indonesia have clearly complementary strengths.
“China is a trustworthy long-term and stable cooperation partner in Indonesia’s national development process, and China has the ability and willingness to help Indonesia transform its resource advantages into development drivers, accelerate industrialisation and modernisation, and deliver more tangible and concrete welfare to the people,” Wang Yi explained.
The more the world is gripped by turmoil and uncertainty, Wang Yi said, the more important it is for China and Indonesia to strengthen unity, mutual trust and mutual support, remain committed to openness and cooperation, better safeguard common interests, achieve each country’s development, and serve as a model of cooperation for Global South countries.
“China is willing to work with Indonesia to seriously implement the important consensus reached by the heads of state of both countries, as well as the outcomes of the Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue Meeting and the Second Ministerial Meeting of the 2+2 Dialogue Mechanism,” Wang Yi said.
Wang Yi added that China and Indonesia will comprehensively promote cooperation in politics, the economy, energy and minerals, the military, security, and other fields, continue to provide new driving forces for the development and rise of each country, and make positive contributions to regional peace and stability.
Also present at the meeting were Foreign Minister Sugiono, Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Wang Lutong, and other relevant officials.
