Banyuwangi – The Chinese company MATA Ecology is eyeing the significant potential of Banyuwangi as a location for developing oyster farming and industry based on a ‘blue industry’ concept, which emphasises environmental sustainability and local community involvement. This interest was conveyed directly by MATA Ecology executives during a meeting with the Regent of Banyuwangi, Ipuk Fiestiandani, on Monday (31/08/2026).

During the meeting, the investors presented their company profile and the investment concept for oyster cultivation and processing to be developed in Banyuwangi. “Yes, we recently hosted investors from China who are interested in developing oyster farming in Banyuwangi. So far, the presented concept is quite interesting as it adopts the blue industry approach, namely environmentally friendly oyster management that also involves the community,” said Regent Iprol, on Tuesday (01/09/2026).

The meeting was attended by the President Director of MATA Ecology, Wang Yong Ming, alongside his board of directors. Accompanying them were Member of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) Commission IV, Rokhmin Dahuri, and MATA Ecology’s Indonesian partner, President Director of Surya Jaya Investama, Chandra Astan.

MATA Ecology is a Chinese firm specialising in oyster cultivation and processing, coastal resource management, and the development of derivative products from aquaculture. The company also develops cultivation technologies oriented towards sustainability.

The proposed investment concept covers everything from cultivation to the downstreaming of oyster products. One such initiative involves processing oyster shells into value-added products, such as fertiliser. This investment is planned to become one of the major investments in Indonesia’s maritime sector.

Regent Ipuk welcomed the plan, particularly as the offered concept aligns with Banyuwangi’s efforts to drive economic growth while maintaining environmental sustainability and community welfare. “We are confident that sustainable oyster farming has the potential to benefit the region, including through increased investment, job creation, the development of the coastal community economy, increased value-add for fishery products, and the strengthening of the marine and fisheries sector in Banyuwangi,” she stated.

Meanwhile, the President Director of MATA Ecology, Wang Yong Ming, noted that Banyuwangi possesses several advantages that support oyster farming development, including water conditions, climate, temperature, and the availability of human resources.

“In our assessment, there are no typhoons here, and the temperature is very suitable, allowing for oyster cultivation throughout the year,” he said.

Wang also stated that Banyuwangi is the first location chosen by MATA Ecology for its planned investment in Indonesia. “This is our first time investing in Indonesia, and we have chosen Banyuwangi. We are very excited to establish this cooperation,” he added.

Member of the DPR RI Commission IV, Rokhmin Dahuri, stated that he recommended Banyuwangi as an investment location due to its maritime potential and the local government’s readiness to receive investment. According to the former Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (2001–2004), MATA Ecology is an oyster company with a strong reputation and experience in China.

“We have ensured that this company is highly reputable and possesses a blueprint that involves the community in its operations. We brought this investor to Banyuwangi because we consider Banyuwangi to be ready,” he said.

Furthermore, the President Director of Surya Jaya Investama, Chandra Astan, acting as the business partner in Indonesia, stated that they will ensure the investment plan proceeds in accordance with local government policies, including aspects of environmental sustainability and local community involvement. “We have prior experience in eco-friendly cultivation and making local communities partners in running aquaculture businesses. This is what we will ensure the investor also implements,” he added.
