Chinese Defence Minister: Indonesia Must Be Strong to Counter Regional Threats
Chinese Defence Minister Admiral Dong Jun has stressed the importance of modernising the national defence systems of Indonesia and China. He said this step is crucial to enable both countries to become a solid force in countering various threats in the region.
The statement was made by Dong Jun after meeting with Indonesian Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin at the Ministry of Defence office in Central Jakarta on Friday (21/8). During the meeting, both parties agreed to deepen military cooperation and accelerate the modernisation of their respective defence systems.
“Currently, China-Indonesia defence cooperation is vastly different compared to previous periods. Both in terms of depth and scope, we have achieved abundant results in various fields and at all levels,” Dong Jun told the media.
Dong Jun expressed his commitment to working with Indonesia in modernising defence equipment and exploring various other potential areas of defence cooperation. This aims to strengthen the strategic position of Indonesia and China, both within ASEAN and on the global stage.
“It can be said that the cooperation between the two countries has broad prospects. Its quality and efficiency continue to improve,” he continued.
He assessed that the current cooperation between the two countries has very broad prospects with continuously improving quality and efficiency. Dong Jun is optimistic that under the direction of their respective heads of state, bilateral relations in the defence sector can be elevated to a higher level.
“Together with Minister Sjafrie, we are equally confident that under the leadership and direction of the heads of state, we can elevate the relationship between the two countries to a higher level. Thank you,” he added.
Responding to this, Indonesian Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin welcomed the plan to strengthen military cooperation. Sjafrie expressed hope that this collaboration can further strengthen diplomatic relations that have been established over the past 19 years.
“The relationship between Indonesia and China has been very close and we are committed to enhancing this cooperation,” Sjafrie asserted.
