“We know that Ramadhan is one of the most important religious holidays for Muslims. We wish that everyone receives happiness, good fortune, and peace,” said Chinese Consul-General Ye Su at the office of Nahdlatul Ulama’s East Java Regional Board (PWNU) in Surabaya on Friday.

He stated that his visit represented the Chinese government and people in extending Ramadhan greetings to Muslims in Indonesia whilst strengthening bonds of brotherhood between Muslim communities in both countries.

According to him, the assistance comprised food and basic daily necessities packages that could be utilised by community members and families.

The Chinese Consulate-General in Surabaya also conducted visits to several religious organisations in East Java, including the Ansor Youth Movement (GP Ansor), East Java Muhammadiyah Provincial Leadership, Nahdlatul Ulama Women’s Wing, and the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) East Java chapter.

He also conveyed that Islam has been present in China for more than 1,300 years, and there are currently approximately 20 million Muslims in the country, including Uyghur communities in Xinjiang.

KH Abdul Hakim Mahfudz, known as Kiai Kikin and head of East Java’s Nahdlatul Ulama, welcomed the initiative as it was deemed beneficial for communities in need.

“This activity is excellent. It represents sympathy from the Chinese government, especially ahead of Eid when basic commodities packages are being distributed, which are indeed needed by society, particularly the underprivileged,” he said.

He added that relations between Nahdlatul Ulama and the Chinese Consulate-General had been running smoothly through communication and various joint activities.

Previously, several Nahdlatul Ulama representatives were invited to visit China to observe developments in the country and interact with the local Muslim community.

“Communication continues and hopefully this relationship will further develop and bring benefits to both parties in the future,” he said.
