Chinese Carmaker Designs In-Car Toilet, Solution for Traffic Jams
Innovation in the automotive industry continues to evolve, not only in terms of performance or entertainment technology, but also touching on more “personal” aspects for users. A Chinese carmaker through the Seres brand under Aito is reportedly filing a patent for a toilet inside a vehicle. Uniquely, this device is stored under the front passenger seat. Although it sounds extreme, the device is not designed for use while the vehicle is moving. Its function is intended for when stationary, such as during long traffic jams, camping, or queuing at rest areas. Technically, this toilet uses a rail mechanism so it can slide in and out like a drawer. After use, the device will be neatly stored back under the seat, utilising space that is usually underused. Not only that, the system is also equipped with a fan and air exhaust duct to channel unpleasant odours out of the vehicle. To enhance comfort, there is also a heating element that functions to dry solid waste while helping to evaporate liquids. The development of this feature is inseparable from the fierce competition in China’s automotive market. Various manufacturers are competing to offer unique features, from massage seats, in-car karaoke, mini fridges, to large entertainment screens. Amid this competition, aspects of user comfort and basic needs are now being eyed as product differentiation. There is no certainty yet whether this technology will truly be mass-produced. Many patents filed by carmakers are limited to idea exploration or concept protection. In addition, there are still several challenges that need to be addressed, such as the waste disposal system, safety, and consumer acceptance of using a toilet inside the vehicle cabin. As a note, similar concepts are not entirely new. Some vehicle modifications have previously featured toilet facilities, and even some classic models were equipped with similar features.
