Chinese AI Models Advance Rapidly, US-China Rivalry Heats Up

With startling speed, China’s position has shifted from lagging years behind the United States in artificial intelligence to trailing by only a few months. While US developers such as Anthropic and OpenAI have spent hundreds of billions of dollars pushing AI forward, China has taken a different path. Faced with US restrictions on advanced chips, leading Chinese developers prioritised open-source models. Platforms including DeepSeek, Qwen from Alibaba, and MiMo from Xiaomi are now widely deployed across businesses, government services, and consumer devices. In a recent sign of the narrowing gap, Chinese start-up Moonshot AI launched Kimi K3, a model that rivals Anthropic’s Claude in performance. Technology expert Alvin W. Graylin noted that Kimi K3 turns frontier AI from an expensive luxury into a practical commodity, as it achieves comparable results at a fraction of the cost.

This progress has provoked a sharp reaction from Washington, with President Donald Trump threatening to block US access to Chinese AI models. US officials have accused Chinese labs of using ‘knowledge distilling’ to extract advanced reasoning capabilities from American models on an industrial scale. Beijing has rejected these accusations as baseless and described the threats as technological intimidation. However, analyst Giulia Neaher from the Stimson Center suggests that distilling played a minor role in Kimi’s success, attributing it instead to talent, infrastructure, and resources. The open-source approach has allowed Chinese developers to engage the global community in improving their models, forcing them to become more creative and efficient under chip restrictions.

While China holds advantages in cost and deployment, Washington is racing to maintain its lead in frontier AI, which is seen as critical for future military, economic, and technological dominance. The rivalry is also spilling into financial markets, with both US and Chinese AI labs preparing for initial public offerings. Anthropic and OpenAI are reportedly planning IPOs to capitalise on massive investor interest, while DeepSeek and Moonshot AI are targeting listings in Hong Kong. With the Chinese tech sector still considered undervalued, US institutional investors are quietly increasing their allocations, betting on the sector’s future growth.
