China's Unexpected Response After Trump Suddenly Renames AI

The Chinese government has finally spoken out regarding the dramatic move by US President Donald Trump to completely overhaul the term Artificial Intelligence (AI) to ‘Super Intelligence’ (SI). Unexpectedly, Beijing has declared an open and respectful stance towards this change in nomenclature.

This change in terminology was officially announced by Trump following a high-level meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington this week. The future technology was indeed one of the primary items on the negotiating table for the two world leaders.

“Like almost everyone else, (Xi) seems to like the renaming of Artificial Intelligence—which is less appropriate and inaccurate—to a much more accurate and important name, namely SUPER INTELLIGENCE,” Trump wrote via his social media platform, as reported by Channel NewsAsia on Sunday (27/9/2026).

Although China did not explicitly confirm Trump’s claim that Xi favoured the name change, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday (26/9/2026) emphasised that it is monitoring and respects Washington’s decision.

“Regarding the question of the term artificial intelligence, the Chinese side is paying attention to the US position and respects the US choice of words,” the official statement from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained.

Special Communication Channel Agreement

Behind the change in terminology, the summit between the two leaders also yielded concrete results. China and the US have officially agreed to establish a special “communication channel” to anticipate and manage various incidents related to artificial intelligence (AI/SI) technology in the future.

Nevertheless, differing dynamics in perspective still shroud the two superpowers. Trump has frequently been known to dismiss concerns that AI technology could pose an existential threat to humanity.

In contrast, President Xi Jinping has taken a far more cautious stance, emphasising that the development of such highly advanced technology must always remain under full human control.
