China's Top Three Investment Sectors in Indonesia: Downstreaming, Manufacturing and Energy
Jakarta — The Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM has identified three investment sectors most favoured by China in Indonesia, spanning downstreaming, energy and manufacturing.
Deputy Minister of Investment/BKPM Todotua Pasaribu said China is Indonesia's second-largest investor nation. According to Todotua, China has its own strategy for investing in Indonesia.
"When it comes to investment value, China is indeed one of the countries whose realised investment into our country is very significant," Todotua said after attending the Tri Hita Karana Business Summit at his office in South Jakarta on Sunday (25/5/2025).
Todotua explained that there are at least three sectors most favoured by Chinese investors.
First is downstreaming, particularly in the smelter processing industry. "When we talk about downstreaming, the success story is in nickel — nickel commodities — and we can say that 80 to 90 per cent of the players come from China," Todotua added.
Second is the manufacturing sector. According to Todotua, China is expanding its manufacturing industry whilst also viewing Indonesia as a large market.
Third is the energy sector. "Then thirdly, I would say energy. Because they also have significant energy management capabilities. In fact, when we met with China Energy recently, China's coal consumption for energy alone stands at four billion [tonnes]. This means they are still operating at a massive scale, but as they move towards green energy, they are already well advanced — and that is what we need," Todotua explained.
