China's J-20 Stealth Fighter Fleet Estimated to Surpass 500 Units, Exceeding US F-35A Numbers

The People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) is estimated to now operate more than 500 Chengdu J-20 fifth-generation stealth fighters, making it the largest fleet of its kind operated by a single air force since the end of the Cold War. Some analysts believe the actual number has approached or even exceeded 600 units, as deliveries to new brigades often occur months or years before official confirmation.

This estimate is based on the confirmation that 18 PLAAF air brigades have now received the J-20. Assuming each brigade operates approximately 28 aircraft, the total number of delivered units reaches 504. Additionally, an estimated 40 to 60 airframes are believed to be used for training and tactics development. The rapid expansion means the J-20 fleet has now surpassed the United States Air Force’s inventory of F-35A jets, with the US fleet estimated at around 430 to 450 units since deliveries began in 2011.

While the J-20’s production surge has focused on quantity, the F-35 programme distributes its production across three variants for multiple global customers. Looking ahead, Chinese military analysts suggest the focus of the J-20 programme is shifting from airframe design to the integration of advanced technologies. Analyst Zhang Xuefeng noted that artificial intelligence will be a primary focus for future upgrades, assisting pilots in long-range engagements and complex air operations.
