China's Humanoid Robots Demonstrate Industrial Capabilities
Beijing (ANTARA) - From choreographed performances at the Spring Festival Gala to stable running in outdoor marathons, China’s humanoid robots are no longer limited to controlled demonstrations but are beginning to operate in more challenging real-world environments. This development offers a tangible picture of progress in this technology sector and the vanguard of the country’s broader industrial resurgence.
In the Beijing E-Town 2026 Half-Marathon event held on Sunday (19/4), a humanoid robot named “Flash” from Shenzhen Honor Smart Technology Development Co., Ltd., finished ahead of all human runners with a time of 50 minutes 26 seconds in autonomous navigation mode, simultaneously breaking the world record of 57 minutes 20 seconds set by Uganda’s marathon star Jacob Kiplimo at the Lisbon Half Marathon in March this year.
This result shows a stark contrast compared to the inaugural race a year earlier, when the Tiangong Ultra humanoid robot won with a time of 2 hours 40 minutes 42 seconds. In that edition, only six out of 20 participating teams managed to complete the race.
If last year most teams only aimed to finish the race without falling, this year’s robots are generally designed and tuned to pursue speeds approaching peak human performance. This development underscores the rapid improvement in performance and reliability of China’s humanoid robotics sector in just one year.
Hosting such races may seem to have no immediate impact at first glance. However, at its core, the event tests a broader proposition: that by designing seemingly “non-utilitarian” extreme scenarios, there is potential to mobilise capital, talent, and engineering resources on a large scale to channel industrial capacity into cutting-edge technologies.
“Humanoid robots have not yet been fully commercialised, so it is difficult for market demand to directly determine requirements such as joint cooling systems or durability, as happens in the electric vehicle industry,” said Shao Yuanxin, founder and chief operating officer of Robstride Dynamics, a domestic integrated joint manufacturer.
In extreme sports scenarios, developers use competitions to drive algorithm optimisation, and the technical validations conducted during and after the competitions will increasingly be applied in real-world implementations. This helps accelerate the transition from experimental systems to practical applications.
At the same time, an industrial chain is forming in China at an accelerating pace, from technology research and development to large-scale manufacturing, and from laboratory validation to real-world environment applications.
In recent years, China has emphasised technological self-reliance and forward-looking planning for emerging industries, identifying the robotics industry as the forefront for seizing future technological advantages.
China’s 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) further positions this sector within the framework of core strategic industrial development, while local governments are also intensifying targeted efforts to accelerate the transition from laboratory research to real-world applications.
Market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) estimates that global humanoid robot shipments will exceed 510,000 units by 2030, implying a compound annual growth rate of nearly 95 per cent.
Official data released on Tuesday (21/4) shows that in the first quarter (Q1) of 2026, adoption of new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) in China has surged across the electronics and consumer goods industries, with industrial robot production jumping 33.2 per cent year-on-year.
Li Yechuan, chief engineer at the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology, revealed that China’s support policies now not only cover funding, talent, and spatial planning but also the creation of a more conducive environment for innovation.
This year’s half-marathon camp also featured a significant presence of young participants. Student teams from top universities, including Peking University, Beihang University, Fudan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Hebei University of Technology, took part in the competition.
Many robotics companies were willing to lend their humanoid robots, some worth hundreds of thousands of yuan, to student teams for free, as an effort to support broader participation from startups and university groups, and to nurture the next generation of robotics talent.
During the marathon event, Zhao Mingguo, a researcher in the Department of Automation at Tsinghua University, told the Yicai business news network that the competition’s participant base has expanded beyond traditional robotics companies to include firms from the automotive and smartphone industries.
These major players, he continued, bring systematic management experience and capacity for large-scale investment, indicating that a broader industrial ecosystem is maturing.
He added that this also underscores the rapid iteration pace in China’s robotics sector, showing that once clear goals are set, the domestic industry has the capacity to execute and realise them more quickly.
