China's Global EV Sales in May: Leapmotor Hits New Record

Data regarding the sales and deliveries of major Chinese automobile manufacturers for May 2024 has been released. In terms of New Energy Vehicle (NEV) sales, Leapmotor achieved a new record with the most aggressive performance, while BYD finally succeeded in halting its downward sales trend.

According to reports from Carnewschina, Leapmotor and Zeekr were the two most prominent performers, both achieving all-time highs in monthly deliveries. Leapmotor delivered 81,569 units in May, an 8-month increase of 81.0 per cent compared to the same period last year, maintaining its position at the top of the NEV startup rankings for the fourth consecutive month.

April marked the eighth consecutive month where BYD’s passenger car sales experienced a year-on-year decline. However, this downward trend ceased this month, with sales increasing by 60 units compared to May last year.

Geely’s NEV sales reached 133,355 units, a 3.4 per cent year-on-year decrease. Its premium electric brand, Zeekr, delivered 34,377 units, an 81.8 per cent increase compared to last year. Chery Group’s NEV sales once again surpassed the 100,000 mark, reaching a total of 100,304 units.

Additionally, Nio delivered 37,705 units, a 62.4 per cent year-on-year increase. Of this total, Nio’s main brand contributed 20,013 units, Onvo contributed 12,029 units (+91.5% YoY), and the Firefly brand added 5,663 units (+53.9% YoY). Xiaomi delivered over 30,000 units in May, while Huawei’s HIMA (Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance) delivered 46,122 units.

Changan sold 92,400 new energy vehicles in May. Its Deepal brand sold 33,243 units, a 30.3 per cent increase compared to last year, whereas its Avatr brand sold 7,336 units, a 42.5 per cent decrease compared to the same period last year.
