Beijing (ANTARA) - China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi is scheduled to visit three Southeast Asian countries, namely Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar, from 22-26 April 2026.

In addition to the official visit, Wang Yi, together with Defence Minister Dong Jun, will attend the first meeting of the China-Cambodia “2+2” strategic dialogue mechanism, involving the foreign and defence ministers of both countries.

“During the visit to Cambodia in April last year, President Xi Jinping and Cambodian leaders agreed to establish the ‘2+2’ strategic dialogue mechanism. This concretely demonstrates the high-level and strategic nature of bilateral relations,” said Spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Guo Jiakun at a press conference in Beijing on Tuesday (21/4).

Prior to Cambodia, Indonesia and China had already established the “2+2” strategic dialogue mechanism, first implemented on 21 April 2025 in Beijing, attended by Foreign Minister Sugiono and Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin.

In addition to Indonesia and Cambodia, China also has a “3+3” mechanism with Vietnam, covering diplomacy, defence, and public security, which was held from 15-17 March 2026.

“In the midst of global turbulence and transformation, the launch of this ‘2+2’ strategic dialogue mechanism can help China and Cambodia strengthen strategic communication and jointly address various external challenges,” added Guo Jiakun.

The “2+2” talks, according to Guo Jiakun, are part of efforts to deepen the China-Cambodia community with a shared future that is resilient and serve as a sure path to advance the modernisation agenda of both countries.

“Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Defence Minister Dong Jun will engage in in-depth exchanges of views with the Cambodian side, focusing on bilateral relations, political and defence-security cooperation, as well as the international and regional situation. They will also meet with Cambodian leaders,” explained Guo Jiakun.

He stated that China is ready to work with Cambodia to make the best use of this strategic communication platform and carry out coordinated efforts to promote high-quality development and high-level security for the prosperity, revitalisation, and long-term stability of both countries.

Meanwhile, the visits to Thailand and Myanmar are described as crucial because, along with Cambodia, they are at critical points in their development processes.

“Cambodia is accelerating the implementation of its Pentagonal Strategy, while the new governments of Thailand and Myanmar have only recently been formed. Therefore, through this visit, China hopes to implement the common understandings between leaders and deepen comprehensive strategic cooperation,” added Guo Jiakun.

The close friendship between China and Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar will bring more benefits to the people of the four countries and make greater contributions to peace, stability, development, and prosperity in the region.
