Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi outlined China’s position on the qualifications required for the next United Nations (UN) Secretary-General on Tuesday (26 May). Speaking to journalists after chairing a Security Council high-level meeting on upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and strengthening the international system centred on the UN, Wang said the next Secretary-General would influence the future of UN reform and the practical interests of member states. ‘China believes the next Secretary-General must at least meet the following qualifications: first, a firm commitment to upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter; second, extensive diplomatic and political experience along with strong coordination abilities,’ Wang stated. ‘Third, the ability to uphold justice on major issues, particularly by considering the interests and aspirations of developing countries; fourth, the capacity to keep UN reform on the right track to enhance efficiency and effectiveness,’ he added. ‘In short, commitment to the UN Charter, competent skills, integrity and neutrality, along with initiative to take responsibility and deliver results. Moving forward, China will work with other parties and take a responsible stance in participating in the selection process for the next Secretary-General,’ Wang continued, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Wang also paid tribute to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who is set to conclude his term soon. Guterres has served as Secretary-General for nearly a decade. During his tenure, he has dedicated himself to multilateralism and worked to uphold the authority of the UN, promote peace, and defend justice, Wang noted. ‘His efforts have been recognised and praised by the international community,’ Wang added.
