China's Defence Minister urges deeper defence cooperation with Indonesia
Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun said China is willing to work with Indonesia to maintain a strategic perspective in promoting cooperation on national defence development and the armed forces, and to continue exploring the potential for deeper defence cooperation.
China and Indonesia are also willing to create more flagship achievements in cooperation and build a solid security guarantee for their respective development, Dong Jun said during the 2+2 Meeting, according to the Chinese Ministry of National Defence website accessed by ANTARA from Beijing on Saturday.
The 2+2 Meeting was also attended by Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Foreign Minister Sugiono and other relevant officials.
The meeting focused on discussing the strengthening of cooperation in the political, defence and security fields at the bilateral, regional and global levels.
“Defence cooperation between the two countries continues to improve in both quality and effectiveness and sets an example for the Global South and major developing countries in carrying out a new form of defence cooperation. At present, global changes have entered a new cycle with increasing comprehensive crises, while the region faces various security challenges,” Dong Jun added.
Meanwhile, Defence Minister Sjafrie, as quoted by the Chinese Ministry of National Defence website, said Indonesia is willing to work with China to strengthen strategic communication, enhance exchanges between the armed forces of the two countries, continue to strengthen cooperation in the fields of defence, maritime security, cyber security, eradication of online gambling, telecommunications fraud and transnational crime, and firmly safeguard regional peace and stability, as well as jointly address global challenges.
“As long as the two countries maintain a brotherly friendship, the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries will continue to achieve new progress,” Sjafrie said.
The four ministers also exchanged in-depth views on international and regional security issues of common concern.
In the statement, it was conveyed that Indonesia and China agreed that development and security are two main agendas that need to be coordinated comprehensively, and that the two countries need to unite to face various external challenges.
The two countries will build awareness as security partners, support each other’s core interests, jointly oppose external interference, and hold the future and destiny of their respective countries and nations in their own hands.
China and Indonesia also appreciated the 2+2 Meeting and will continue to rely on this important platform for strategic communication to deepen unity and coordination and promote positive progress in political, security and defence cooperation.
Both sides agreed to strengthen law enforcement and security cooperation in combating transnational crime, pursuing fugitives and recovering assets from criminal proceeds, as well as supporting participation in international cooperation to eradicate telecommunications and online fraud.
The two countries will also implement maritime security cooperation documents and maintain the security and smooth flow of major shipping lanes.
“China and Indonesia will deepen defence cooperation and promote practical cooperation in the fields of defence technology and equipment, joint exercises and joint training, personnel training, and maritime security so that it develops in a routine and institutionalised manner, while continuing to improve its quality and effectiveness,” the statement said.
The two countries jointly called for an Asian security model that emphasises togetherness in facing security and threats, seeking common ground while setting aside differences, and prioritising dialogue and consultation.
The two countries will also seriously maintain cooperation as the mainstream in the region and safeguard peace and stability in the South China Sea.
Both will strengthen coordination on Middle East issues and actively promote peace and an end to war.
“The two countries agreed to seriously transform various consensuses into tangible results, become an example for developing countries in uniting and strengthening themselves, and make efforts to maintain peace and promote development,” the statement read.
The 2+2 Dialogue was first held in Beijing in April 2025. Indonesia hosted this meeting, complementing bilateral cooperation in five strategic pillars, especially security, as agreed by President Prabowo Subianto and Chinese President Xi Jinping since November 2024.
