China-US Relations Are Too Important to Fail

Beijing (ANTARA) - US President Donald Trump’s visit to China occurs amid global turbulence and profound changes. Against this backdrop, the world anticipates that this high-level meeting can send a clear signal that China and the US are capable of managing differences, expanding cooperation, and maintaining global stability. From global trade and financial markets to climate governance and artificial intelligence (AI), few major international issues can be effectively addressed without coordination between Beijing and Washington. This is the reason why stable China-US relations are vital, not only for the two countries but also for the world at large. Since Trump returned to the White House, despite frictions in trade and technology, China and the US have successfully maintained communication and prevented disputes from spiralling out of control. Head-of-state diplomacy provides crucial strategic guidance in stabilising relations during critical moments. Experience has repeatedly shown that when China and the US strengthen dialogue and cooperation, global economic confidence rises and international tensions ease. Conversely, when communication breaks down, uncertainty spreads and extends far beyond the bilateral relationship. China approaches its relations with the US consistently and with a strong sense of responsibility as a major power. Beijing emphasises that both sides must uphold the spirit of equality, mutual respect, and mutual benefit, principles that reflect valuable lessons learned from decades of interactions as well as the practical realities of the current world. China clearly understands that competition between major powers is inevitable. However, competition does not always have to lead to confrontation, let alone conflict. Managing differences through dialogue is not a sign of weakness but a rational choice expected from responsible major powers. At the same time, China continues to demonstrate its openness to cooperation. Economic ties between the two countries remain deeply intertwined. Cooperation in various areas, such as narcotics eradication, people-to-people exchanges, and subnational cooperation, also continues. These interactions highlight a simple reality: China-US cooperation aligns with the interests of both nations and the needs of the international community. Of course, differences still exist. Issues related to trade, technology, and security continue to test the relations between the two countries. History shows that unilateral pressure, decoupling efforts, or zero-sum thinking cannot provide lasting solutions. The fundamental nature of China-US economic relations is inherently mutually beneficial. Trade and technology wars will not produce true winners. For bilateral relations to move forward stably, both sides must manage differences on the basis of equality and mutual respect. China welcomes a confident, open, and prosperous US. Likewise, Washington must view China’s development rationally and objectively, respect China’s core interests, and work with China to expand areas of cooperation while properly managing differences. The world today faces increasingly greater challenges, from sluggish economic recovery and geopolitical conflicts to climate risks and rapid technological disruptions. The international community increasingly places hopes on major powers to provide stability, coordination, and leadership. As permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and the world’s two largest economies, China and the US have a special responsibility to provide greater certainty and more public goods to the world. A single high-level meeting will not resolve all issues between Beijing and Washington. However, this meeting can help strengthen communication, rebuild trust, and reaffirm a fundamental truth: stable China-US relations are extremely important, not only for the interests of the two countries but also for global peace and prosperity.
