China trains police from ASEAN nations

CHINA: China has started training police officers from Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia as part of efforts to boost security cooperation with ASEAN nations, state media said on Monday.

Ten officers from Cambodia completed a training program run by China's Ministry of Public Security last week, becoming the first police officers from an ASEAN country to be instructed by China.

A batch of officers from Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam will undergo training in criminal investigative techniques, surveillance analysis and ammunition handling by the end of August, the China Daily reported.

"China and ASEAN member states have had good cooperation in fighting transnational crime," said Liu Zhiqiang, the director of the ministry's foreign affairs department.

"The training program is expected to improve the skills of police and enhance regional security." --AFP
