Beijing — China will drive digital and green transition in its transport sector during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030), according to China’s Transport Minister Liu Wei on Monday, 9 March.

Over the next five years, the country will promote the application of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the transport sector, whilst striving to advance development of intelligent highways, smart ports and smart logistics, Liu said during the annual session of China’s national legislative body.

The country will also promote the development of zero-carbon transport corridors and stations as part of efforts to accelerate low-carbon development in the transport sector, Liu stated, adding that China will also increase application of clean energy transport equipment such as new-energy vehicles and ships during the period.

Currently, charging facilities in service areas along expressways throughout China have reached 98.8 per cent coverage, Liu said, adding that the country will seek to improve high-power battery charging capacity this year to reduce difficulties in finding charging stations and reduce waiting times.

Liu also stated that during the 15th Five-Year Plan period, China will implement initiatives to improve intercity travel efficiency in metropolitan regions, which will significantly increase the proportion of residents with access to one-hour travel in those areas.

The transport sector plays an important role in serving the public, Liu said, noting that on average approximately 550 million parcels are handled across China daily, meaning three parcels per individual per week.
