China takes decisive steps to protect national energy security
Beijing — China will take the necessary steps to ensure energy security in the country, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun on Monday (9 March).
“Energy security is extremely important for the global economy. All parties are responsible for ensuring stable and unobstructed energy supplies. China will do what is necessary to protect energy security,” Guo said at a press conference.
According to the National Development and Reform Commission, China will raise domestic petrol and diesel retail prices starting Tuesday due to rising global prices.
“Domestic petrol and diesel prices will each increase by 695 yuan (approximately Rp1.6 million) and 670 yuan (approximately Rp1.6 million) per tonne respectively,” according to the statement.
This marks the most significant price adjustment for petrol and diesel fuel in China during 2026.
China’s current oil product pricing mechanism stipulates that if global oil prices change by more than 50 yuan (approximately Rp122,173) per tonne and remain at that level for 10 working days, domestic petrol and diesel prices will be adjusted proportionally.

Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has nearly halted following the conflict. The Strait of Hormuz is the primary route for oil and gas exports from the Persian Gulf, accounting for approximately 20 per cent of global trade in oil, petroleum products, and liquefied natural gas.
