China Surpasses US and Russia with World's Largest Diplomatic Network

Diplomatic networks and posts are key indicators of a country’s global influence. China now leads the world in diplomatic posts, surpassing the United States and Russia.

The data comes from an interactive database by the Lowy Institute think tank, covering regions in Asia, the G20, and OECD nations.

According to the latest data reviewed by detikcom on Tuesday, 26 May 2026, China holds the top position with 274 diplomatic posts, followed by the US with 271.

Regions dominated by China:

Africa: China leads with 60 posts, compared to the US’s 56.

East Asia: China maintains a clear dominance with 44 posts, far exceeding the US’s 27.

Pacific Island Nations: China narrowly leads with 9 posts, against the US’s 8.

Central Asia: China holds 7 posts, surpassing the US’s 6, particularly following the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Regions dominated by the United States:

Europe: The US controls 78 posts, ahead of China’s 73.

North and Central America: The US leads significantly with 40 posts, compared to China’s 24.

South Asia: The US leads with 12 posts, versus China’s 10.
