China Successfully Clones Endangered Tibetan Yak
Chinese scientists have successfully cloned two Tibetan yaks that live on the high plateau, in a medical and scientific breakthrough aimed at saving the rare species from the threat of extinction. The cloned calves were born in the Tibet Autonomous Region through a collaboration between researchers from China Agricultural University and local livestock authorities. The project was launched to address the drastic decline in genetic quality and population numbers of native yak breeds in the Himalayan region due to inbreeding and environmental changes. The cloning used somatic cells taken from the ear of a superior male yak. Through somatic cell nuclear transfer technology, the genetic material was inserted into an egg cell whose nucleus had been removed, before being implanted into the womb of a surrogate. The two calves that were born are reported to be in healthy condition with normal weight and vital signs. This success marks the first time somatic cell cloning technology has been successfully applied to the yak species in the extreme temperatures and low air pressure of the Tibetan highlands. Yaks play a crucial role in the ecosystem and local economy of Tibet. For centuries, these animals have been the mainstay of local residents, providing food in the form of meat and milk, wool for clothing, and serving as the primary means of transport across rugged terrain. The researchers stressed that this cloning effort is not intended to replace natural breeding, but rather to serve as a means of genetic resource conservation. By preserving the genetic material of superior individuals, the biodiversity of the native Tibetan yak can be protected from the risk of genetic deterioration. Going forward, the research team plans to integrate these cloned individuals into local breeding programmes to strengthen the resilience of the community’s livestock population. This breakthrough is expected not only to save the existence of the Tibetan yak but also to pave the way for similar conservation schemes for other endangered rare species in high-altitude regions.
