China Sends Second Wave of Aid to Nepal

The Chinese government has once again sent humanitarian aid to Nepal following the flash floods and mudslides that have struck the border regions of both nations. This move is part of Beijing’s political commitment to strengthening friendship and disaster management cooperation with Nepal.

Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, stated that the second wave of aid supplies is scheduled for dispatch on Tuesday (1/9). This assistance is focused on the urgent needs of field search and recovery operations.

“These supplies include highly needed items such as drones, equipment and ‘reagents’ for DNA testing, as well as water purification and lighting equipment,” said Guo Jiakun during a press conference in Beijing.

Landslides and flooding in northern Nepal have caused a massive humanitarian impact. According to reports from the Nepal police cited by China Central Television (CCTV), the death toll has exceeded one thousand people.

Despite the continuous flow of aid, rescue operations face significant challenges. Guo Jiakun acknowledged that road access and communication lines in the landslide-affected areas remain severed. Furthermore, there are major safety risks due to the potential for secondary disasters.

To address these obstacles, China is sending not only logistics but also technical experts. “Chinese DNA testing experts will soon depart for the disaster area to assist Nepal in identification operations,” Guo added.

In addition to physical aid, China continues to provide support in the form of real-time meteorological and hydrological information, professional consultations, and early warnings to prevent further casualties from subsequent disasters. The Chinese government also emphasised that it is coordinating closely with foreign embassies to identify foreign nationals who remain missing, originating from at least 39 different countries.
